Some More Registry Tips N Tricks

These tips are provided as-is, with no warranty, either implied or otherwise. These tips do not include a thorough explanation of why you may want to use them, or why it might be a good idea not to. They are strictly meant to be a listing of registry tips and tweaks that I have collected over the years.

• Disable Windows Animation

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Control Panel \Desktop \WindowMetrics\MinAnimate

Set this to 1

• Windows Refresh Rate

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Update\UpdateMode

Setting value to 00 will force an instant update to Windows Explorer.

• Restrict Users from Changing their Home Page

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel\HomePage

This DWORD set to 1 will make it so users cannot change their Internet Explorer home page. Setting it to 0 will allow the home page to be changed.

• Remove Shortcut Arrow

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile\IsShortcut
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile\IsShortcut

Delete these values if you want to remove the arrow that appears on all shortcuts.

• Change the Name of the Recycle Bin

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\LocalizedString

Changing the text at the end of this value from Recycle Bin to the text of your choice will change the name of the recycle bin.

• Remove Shutdown from the Start Menu

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\Explorer\NoClose

This String Value set to 1 removes the Shutdown option from the Startmenu. Change it to 0 to allow shutdowns.

FOR FASTER WEB PAGE LOADING:

This tweak will help web pages load faster, it has no real effect on download speeds, just helps your pc look up websites faster thereby speeding up how fast the page loads and making websurfing more enjoyable.
Navigate to this registry entry and change the following settings:
For XP & 2K
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\ServiceProvider
For 98, 98SE & ME
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP\ServiceProvider
On the right for ALL OS's change these entries: (ALL values are HEXIDECIMAL)
Class - 1DnsPriority - 1 HostsPriority - 1 LocalPriority - 1 NetbtPriority - 1

Windows 2K & XP cache Tweak

To change the value right mouse click on the value and select modify and enter the values above once you have done all of them reboot to take effect and see how fast your pages load.
By default Windows 2K & XP cache everything in the DNS cache service, both correct and faulty DNS lookups. To increase performance by eliminating the caching of faulty DNS lookups, change the following values from whatever their original values are to zero.

Restricting Access to Password Properties

Options to restrict access to password properties are placed in the Registry in the key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
A value set to 0x00000001 disables access; deleting the value or setting it to 0 enables access.
NoSecCPL - Disable Passwords Control Panel. If the value is set to 1, the Passwords Properties property sheet is not accessible.
NoPwdPage - Hide Change Password Page. If the value is set to 1, the Change Passwords property page on the Passwords Properties sheet is hidden.
NoAdminPage - Hide Remote Administration Page. If the value is set to 1, the Remote Administration property page on the Passwords Properties property sheet is hidden.
NoProfilePage - Hide User Profiles Page. If the Value is set to 1, the Profile property page on the Passwords Properties property sheet is hidden.
